Electrician in Henderson
Licensed West Auckland sparkies, just up the road in Waitākere
We’re Totally Amped Electrical, based in Waitākere, and Henderson is basically our backyard. From our Waitākere base it’s about a 14-minute run in via Waitākere Road (Route 24) and Swanson Road, so when something trips, flickers, or just quits on you, we’re not crawling across the city to get there. We work right across the suburb, from the post-war state houses around Western Heights to the newer townhouses going up in Ranui, and we already know the local wiring quirks because we see them most weeks.

Why Henderson Chooses Us
Why Henderson Locals Choose Us
Henderson isn’t one kind of house. You’ve got 1950s state homes, 70s brick-and-tile, mid-century weatherboard, and a steady wave of new townhouses replacing old single dwellings. That spread is exactly why local knowledge matters. An electrician who only ever works new builds gets a fright the first time they open a 60-year-old switchboard, and one who only knows old homes is lost in a modern multi-unit development. We work across both ends of that range every week.
We’re EWRB-registered (the Electrical Workers Registration Board, which licenses sparkies in New Zealand), so the work is done legally and signed off properly. Where a job legally needs it, you get a Certificate of Compliance, which is your proof the work meets the wiring rules. And before we touch anything, we tell you in plain English what’s going on and what it’ll take to put right. No jargon dump, no scare tactics.
Areas We Cover
Neighbourhoods We Serve in Henderson
We cover the whole suburb and the areas that run into it, and the work shifts depending on where you are. Western Heights and Sunnyvale carry a lot of the older state-housing stock, so that’s where most of our safety-switch and switchboard jobs land. Henderson Valley runs up toward the ranges with bigger older brick homes on bush-fringed sections, which tend to want full rewires and proper heating circuits, and because it sits higher and closer to the Waitākere Ranges, it catches more rain that finds its way into older outdoor fittings.
Glendene is more of a mid-century mix of weatherboard and brick, again older boards and wiring that benefit from an upgrade. Ranui is the interesting one right now: alongside its established homes there’s a lot of redevelopment, with new townhouses going up where single houses once stood, so we’re doing old-home repairs on one street and brand-new wiring or an EV charger circuit on the next. Out toward Te Atatū, salt in the air becomes a real factor for anything mounted outside.
We’re across the main routes too, Lincoln Road, Great North Road, Universal Drive, Henderson Valley Road, and the Railside Avenue trade strip, so commercial and shop-front jobs are no trouble. Whether you’re near Falls Park, the Corban Estate Arts Centre, WestCity Waitakere, or the train station, you’re well inside our patch. It’s all part of the Henderson-Massey Local Board area, and it’s the part of Auckland we know best.
What We Do
Services We Provide in Henderson
Most Henderson calls come down to a handful of jobs we do constantly:
- Switchboard upgrades. Swapping a tired old fuse board for a modern one with proper circuit breakers and safety switches. It’s the fix when the old board keeps tripping, can’t take a safety switch, or simply can’t keep up with how many appliances a modern home runs.
- Safety switch installation. Fitting RCDs, the safety switches that cut the power in a fraction of a second when something goes wrong, like a faulty appliance or water reaching a circuit. On many boards we can retrofit them; on a really old board it’s part of a full upgrade.
- Electrical repairs. Tracking down the actual cause when a circuit keeps tripping, a socket’s gone dead, lights flicker, or there’s a burning smell. We find and fix the fault, not just reset the breaker and hope.
- Renovation wiring. Rewiring and adding circuits and points during a reno so the new kitchen, bathroom or extension is wired for how you’ll actually use it. We handle the in-wall cabling stage (sparkies call it the rough-in or first fix) through to fit-off.
- Maintenance. Scheduled checks for landlords and businesses who’d rather catch a problem early than get a 5pm phone call about it.
- Commercial work. Fit-outs, repairs and switchboard work for the shops, offices and light-industrial units along Lincoln Road and Railside Avenue.
Older Homes, Local Knowledge
Local Considerations for Henderson Wiring
Here’s the thing about a lot of Henderson’s housing: it predates the wiring rules we work to now, and that shapes nearly every older-home job. The 1950s and 60s state houses around Western Heights and Sunnyvale were often run on twin-and-earth cable feeding rewireable fuse boards, the kind where you replace a melted fuse wire by hand. Those boards can’t take a safety switch without being replaced, which is why what starts as “can you fit an RCD” often becomes a switchboard upgrade once we get the cover off.
In homes from that era you also see old rubber or cloth-insulated wiring that’s gone brittle with age, and that’s a rewire conversation, not a patch. The 70s brick homes up in Henderson Valley have a different problem: the original wiring was never sized for today’s heat pumps, EV chargers and double ovens, so circuits run hot and breakers nuisance-trip when everything’s on at once. Newer Ranui townhouses are the opposite end, they’re wired to current standards, but they’re where we get asked for extra circuits, EV charging and the like.
And anywhere on the Te Atatū side, salt-laden air speeds up corrosion on outdoor power points, switchboards and fittings, so we spec gear rated for it rather than replacing the same part every couple of years. If you want the official line on why safety switches matter, WorkSafe’s guidance on safe living with electricity is worth a read.
Coming To You
Getting to You in Henderson
We come to you, so here’s the run we make. From our Waitākere base we head out on Waitākere Road (Route 24), pick up Swanson Road, and that drops us straight into Henderson, roughly 10 km and about 14 minutes in normal traffic. From there it’s a quick hop to wherever you are, whether that’s the town centre on Lincoln Road, up in Henderson Valley, or over toward Falls Park and Henderson Creek.
Being right next door in Waitākere is the whole point: we can get to a job in Henderson fast, and we’re not a city firm fitting the suburb in around everywhere else. Book a time and we’ll come to you.
HENDERSON ELECTRICIAN FAQs
Do you cover all of Henderson, including Henderson Valley and Western Heights?
Yep, the whole suburb and the edges around it, Sunnyvale, Glendene, Ranui, and over toward Te Atatū. Henderson Valley’s winding, bush-lined streets are no problem either.
Our place is a 1950s state house in Sunnyvale with the old fuse board. Can you bring it up to standard?
That’s one of our most common Henderson jobs. We’ll check what you’ve got and talk you through whether it’s a safety-switch retrofit or a full switchboard upgrade. Older boards like that often can’t take an RCD as-is, so we’ll be straight with you about what’s actually needed.
How long does it take you to get to Henderson from Waitākere?
About 14 minutes via Waitākere Road and Swanson Road. We’re genuinely local, not coming from the other side of the city.
We’re on the Te Atatū side and our outdoor wiring keeps corroding. What can you do?
Salt air is the culprit. We use fittings and enclosures rated for that exposure, so the repair lasts instead of rusting out again in a year or two.
Can you handle EV charger or heat pump circuits in older Henderson homes?
We can, and in an older home the first question is always whether the existing board and supply can carry the extra load. We check that first, upgrade what needs upgrading, then install it properly.
Do I need a Certificate of Compliance for the work?
For a lot of jobs, yes. It’s the document that proves the work meets the wiring rules, and it’s worth keeping for insurance and resale. Where a job legally needs one, we provide it as part of the work.
We’ve got a rental in Ranui. Can you do landlord electrical work?
Yes. We do switchboard and safety-switch work, repairs and maintenance on rentals across Henderson, and can keep it on a regular check so small faults get caught before tenants are calling about them.
