Electrician in Glen Eden

Registered West Auckland electricians for Glen Eden homes and businesses

We’re Totally Amped Electrical, registered West Auckland electricians who’ve been wiring, repairing and rewiring homes and businesses since 2009. Glen Eden is right in our patch: an established, mostly timber suburb of post-war bungalows and weatherboard homes strung along the train line, with the bush of the Waitākere Ranges climbing up behind it. We run in from our Waitākere base via Candia Road, about twenty minutes, and it’s a drive we know well.

Why Glen Eden Chooses Us

Why Glen Eden Locals Choose Us

Glen Eden is an older suburb, and that’s exactly where local experience pays off. Most of the houses here are timber: 1930s places, post-war bungalows, weatherboard homes that have been added to over the decades. Behind the linings, a lot of them still carry wiring and switchboards from a very different era.

We’ve been working on homes like these since 2009, so we know what tends to turn up once the cover comes off. The brittle old cable in the ceiling. The board with no room for a safety switch. The circuit that was fine in 1965 and is now running a heat pump it was never meant to. None of that surprises us, and that means no guesswork on your job.

We carry EWRB registration (every New Zealand electrician has to be licensed through that board), fully insured, and we turn up when we said we would. You get a straight explanation of what we found and what it needs, in plain English.

Areas We Cover

Neighbourhoods We Serve in Glen Eden

Glen Eden runs from a busy town centre out to quiet bush-edge streets, and we cover the whole of it.

The town centre around Glenmall and the railway station is the hub, where the shops, offices and the older commercial buildings sit. Plenty of this is small business and retail work: lighting, switchboard safety, fit-outs and the tidy compliance paperwork a landlord actually wants.

Spread out from there and you’re into the residential streets that make up most of the suburb. Street after street of timber homes, from tidy post-war bungalows to the odd 1930s place, and this is the heart of our work here: rewires, switchboard upgrades, safety switches and the general sorting-out that older houses need.

Down the middle runs the Waikumete Stream valley, and the land tips and gullies in a way a flat suburb never does. Toward Kaurilands, Konini and the Titirangi side, the sections get leafier and the bush gets closer, which changes how we plan any outdoor or under-house work.

We pick up jobs all around the edges too, since people don’t stop at the suburb line. Across to New Lynn, up to Sunnyvale, and out toward Oratia. If you’re in or near Glen Eden, you’re on our patch.

Old Timber & The Gully

Local Considerations for Glen Eden Electrical Work

Here’s where Glen Eden differs from a newer suburb, and where knowing the area earns its keep.

The timber housing stock. Most of Glen Eden is wooden, and a lot of it predates modern wiring rules. That means old rubber or cloth-insulated cable that goes brittle with age, switchboards with rewireable fuses and no safety switch, and circuits that were never designed for a modern kitchen, a heat pump and an EV. Older timber homes also deserve good smoke-alarm coverage, since fire moves fast in a wooden house. If you want the official line on why safety switches matter, WorkSafe’s guidance on safe living with electricity is worth a read.

The gully and the bush. The Waikumete Stream valley runs through the middle of the suburb, and toward Titirangi and Kaurilands the sections get steeper, shadier and more treed. Damp gullies and bush cover are hard on outdoor power points, under-house wiring and garden lighting, so that gear needs to be properly weatherproof and well protected, not an afterthought.

The town centre. Around Glenmall and the station there’s a steady run of shop and office work: lighting, three-phase, fit-outs and the compliance paperwork a building warrant of fitness needs. It’s a different job from a house, and we do both.

Glen Eden sits within the Waitākere Ranges Local Board area of Auckland Council, and any work that needs a consent or an inspection runs through the council’s usual process. That side is just part of the job for us.

GLEN EDEN ELECTRICIAN FAQs

My older Glen Eden timber home still has its original wiring. Should I be worried?

It’s worth getting checked. A lot of the suburb’s older timber homes still run rubber or cloth-covered cable that goes brittle with age, and switchboards that can’t take a modern safety switch. We’ll inspect it, tell you honestly whether it needs a full rewire or just some attention, and explain why either way.

Can you do a pre-purchase electrical check on a Glen Eden character home?

Yes. Before you buy an older home here, a proper inspection tells you what the wiring and switchboard are actually like, so there are no nasty surprises after settlement. We go through it and give you a clear picture of what, if anything, needs doing.

Why do the outdoor power points and lights at my place keep failing?

Damp is usually the cause. A lot of Glen Eden sits in the Waikumete Stream gully or on shady, treed sections toward the bush, and that’s hard on anything electrical outside. We swap failed gear for properly weatherproof fittings and make sure the outdoor circuits are protected, so they last.

Do you install hardwired smoke alarms in Glen Eden rentals?

We do. Hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms matter all the more in older timber homes, and they’re part of meeting the Healthy Homes rules on a rental. We can fit a full set and tie them together so when one goes off, they all do.

How long does it take you to get to a Glen Eden job?

About twenty minutes from our Waitākere base, via Candia Road. We’re on that road regularly. Urgent problems get a fast response, and planned jobs get a time that works for you, kept to the day.
