Electrician in Avondale

Registered West Auckland electricians for Avondale’s older homes, town-centre apartments and Rosebank Road businesses

We’re Totally Amped Electrical, registered Auckland electricians who’ve been wiring and rewiring West Auckland homes since 2009. Avondale sits right on our regular run. From our Waitākere base it’s a quick trip out along Swanson Road and onto Great North Road, and we’re in the heart of the suburb in about 20 to 25 minutes. We know Avondale’s mix well: the 1960s family homes, the apartments going up around the town centre, and the businesses along Rosebank Road.

Why Avondale Chooses Us

Why Avondale Locals Choose Us

Avondale grew up as a market-garden and industrial suburb, and most of its houses went up in the 1960s. Older suburb, older wiring. That’s the work we do day in, day out, so when you ring about a fuse board that keeps tripping, or a renovation that needs the whole place rewired, you’re talking to people who have seen it before.

We’re EWRB-registered (the Electrical Workers Registration Board, which licenses sparkies in New Zealand). Where a job legally needs it, you get a Certificate of Compliance, your proof the work was done to the current wiring rules.

And before we touch anything, we tell you in plain English what we’ve found and what it’ll take to fix. No jargon, no pressure.

Areas We Cover

Neighbourhoods We Serve in Avondale

We cover the whole suburb, not just the main drag.

  • The town centre. The older shops along Great North Road and the new apartments and terraces now rising around them. Plenty of pre-1970 buildings here, with switchboards to match.
  • The Rosebank Peninsula. The long industrial stretch off Rosebank Road, manufacturing and trade premises that need commercial-grade work.
  • Around Eastdale Reserve. The family streets at the foot of the peninsula, mostly mid-century homes.
  • Harbutt Reserve and the Oakley Creek walkway. The lower-lying streets near the water (the creek’s other name is Te Auaunga).
  • Avondale Central Reserve and Mills Park. The community pocket just off the town centre.
  • The borders. Out toward New Lynn, Blockhouse Bay and New Windsor, and east toward Mount Albert and Waterview.

Near the Sunday Market and the racecourse, or tucked away on a quiet street off Great North Road. Same to us. We come to you.

Worth Knowing

Electrical Considerations for Avondale Homes

A few things about Avondale shape the electrical work it needs.

The age of the houses. With so much of the suburb built in the 1960s, a lot of homes still run the switchboard they were built with: old ceramic-fuse or rewireable boards that pre-date safety switches and can’t take an RCD without being replaced. If yours hasn’t been looked at in decades, it’s worth a check before it becomes a problem. WorkSafe’s guidance on safe living with electricity explains why those safety switches matter.

The water. Avondale sits in the Whau River catchment, and the Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek runs through it. Streets near the creek and the estuary edges sit low, and the big 2023 storms showed a lot of Aucklanders exactly where the water goes. For electrical work, that means being smart about where the switchboard, meter box and outdoor points sit, keeping them clear of the spots that flood.

The town centre. Avondale is in the middle of a council-backed regeneration, with apartments and terraces going up around the old main street. The plans sit with the Whau Local Board. Builds like these need proper common-area wiring, separate metering for each unit, and EV charging in the carparks.

Rentals. There’s a good amount of rental stock around Avondale, and the older houses often need bringing up to the Healthy Homes standards: RCDs, safe heating circuits, sound wiring. We sort that for landlords and property managers.

Coming To You

Getting to You in Avondale

We come to you. From our Waitākere base we head out along Swanson Road and onto Great North Road, which runs straight through the middle of Avondale. It’s roughly 19 km and about 20 to 25 minutes in normal traffic.

Once we’re on Great North Road we can reach anywhere in the suburb easily: the town centre, the Rosebank industrial area, and the residential streets out toward the New Lynn and Blockhouse Bay borders.

Avondale’s a regular part of our week, not a once-in-a-while trip. Give us the address and we’ll be there, van loaded and ready to work.

AVONDALE ELECTRICIAN FAQs

Do you rewire older Avondale homes?

Yes, and it’s a big part of what we do here. A lot of the suburb’s houses date from the 1960s and still have their original wiring and switchboards. We handle full rewires, switchboard upgrades and safety-switch retrofits, and we’ll tell you honestly whether a board needs replacing or just a tidy-up.

Can you install an EV charger at a town-centre apartment or townhouse?

We can. With the newer Avondale builds we check the switchboard has the capacity, sort the load management, and where it’s a shared building we work in with the body corporate on the carpark install.

My place is near Oakley Creek and the ground gets wet. Can you help with the switchboard?

Definitely. In the low-lying streets near the creek and estuary, where the board, meter box and outdoor points sit really matters. We can move or reposition gear to keep it clear of the areas that flood.

Do you do commercial work along Rosebank Road?

Yes. The Rosebank industrial area is full of premises that need commercial-grade electrical work: three-phase supply, switchboard safety inspections, machinery circuits and fit-outs. We cover all of it.

Which parts of Avondale do you actually cover?

All of it. The town centre, the Rosebank Peninsula, the streets around the Sunday Market and racecourse, and right out to the New Lynn, Blockhouse Bay and New Windsor borders. If you’re not sure, just call and we’ll confirm.
