Electrician in New Lynn
Registered West Auckland electricians for New Lynn homes, apartments and businesses
We’re Totally Amped Electrical, registered West Auckland electricians who’ve been wiring, repairing and rewiring homes and businesses since 2009. New Lynn is one of the busier patches we cover, from the apartments and townhouses going up around the rail interchange to the solid older brick homes the area’s Crown Lynn days left behind. We run in from our Waitākere base via Swanson Road and Great North Road, and it’s a trip we make often.

Why New Lynn Chooses Us
Why New Lynn Locals Choose Us
New Lynn isn’t one kind of place, and that’s exactly why a local electrician matters here. In the space of a few blocks you go from brand-new apartments by the station, to post-war state homes, to solid brick houses from the suburb’s pottery-and-brickworks years, to a town centre full of shops and offices. Each one wires up differently.
We’ve worked across that whole spread since 2009. We bring the same range just south, with our electrical work in Glen Eden. That means when we walk into a 1950s brick place we already know what the switchboard is likely hiding, and when we’re called to a new townhouse or an apartment block we know how the supply, the metering and the common areas are meant to hang together. No learning on your job.
We’re EWRB-registered (the Electrical Workers Registration Board that licenses New Zealand electricians), fully insured, and we turn up when we said we would. You get a straight explanation of what we found and what it actually needs, not a sales pitch.
Areas We Cover
Neighbourhoods We Serve in New Lynn
New Lynn is compact and busy, and we cover all of it, town centre and back streets alike.
Right in the middle, around the rail and bus interchange, is where the suburb has changed most. The Merchant Quarter apartments and the wave of townhouses near the station mean a lot of higher-density work: shared supplies, body-corporate common areas, car-park EV charging and unit-by-unit metering. It’s a different job from a standalone house, and it pays to use someone who’s done it before.
The LynnMall and town-centre precinct is the commercial heart, with shops, offices and food places that need fit-outs, three-phase, lighting and the kind of tidy compliance paperwork a landlord or a building manager actually asks for.
Then there are the residential streets that give New Lynn its character. Plenty of post-war state homes and good solid brick houses, a legacy of the suburb’s Crown Lynn brick-and-pottery days. These are the places where an old switchboard or decades-old wiring quietly needs sorting before it becomes a problem.
We pick up work all around the edges too, since people don’t stop at the suburb sign. Down toward the Whau River and Kelston, across to Avondale, and out to Green Bay, Blockhouse Bay, New Windsor and the Glen Eden side. If you’re in or near New Lynn, you’re on our patch.
What We Do
Services We Provide in New Lynn
House, apartment or shopfront, it’s likely something we’re on most weeks:
- Switchboard upgrades. upgrading a dated fuse board to a modern switchboard with full circuit-breaker and safety-switch protection. It’s the standard fix for an older New Lynn brick or state home where the board keeps tripping or can’t take a safety switch.
- Safety switch installation. Fitting RCDs, the safety switches that drop the power in a heartbeat when something goes wrong. Essential on older homes, and required wiring practice on the new townhouses and apartments going in.
- Electrical repairs. Finding the actual cause when a circuit keeps tripping, a socket’s dead, lights flicker, or there’s a burning smell. We track the fault down rather than just reset the breaker.
- Renovation wiring. New wiring, circuits and points during a reno, ideal for the older brick and character homes around here where the wiring hasn’t kept up with the kitchen. From the in-wall cabling (the first-fix stage) through to fit-off.
- EV chargers. A charger for the driveway, garage or apartment car park. We’ll check the board or the building supply has the headroom and run it in properly, including the trickier shared-carpark setups.
- Commercial and fit-out work. Three-phase power, shop and office fit-outs, lighting and compliance for the LynnMall and town-centre businesses, landlords and shopfit builders.
- Data and network cabling. Structured data cabling for offices, apartments and home setups, so the network side is as sorted as the power.

Local Considerations for New Lynn Electrical Work
Here’s where New Lynn differs from a quiet standalone-house suburb, and where knowing the area earns its keep.
Apartments and townhouses. The density around the station brings its own electrical rules. Shared main supplies, separate metering for each home, body-corporate common-area lighting and power, and EV charging that has to draw from a building supply without starving everything else. Getting the load planning right up front is the whole game, and it’s easy to under-do if you treat a unit like a standalone house.
The older brick and state homes. New Lynn grew up around brick and pottery, and a lot of those solid older houses are still here. Many still run the switchboard and wiring they were built with, which is fine until you add a heat pump, an induction cooktop and a couple of high-draw appliances. That’s when the board needs bringing up to date so it can carry a modern household safely. If you want the official line on why safety switches matter, WorkSafe’s guidance on safe living with electricity is a good read.
The town-centre businesses. Shops and offices around LynnMall and the main street need work that residential sparkies don’t always handle: three-phase, emergency and exit lighting, fit-outs on a tenant’s deadline, and the compliance paperwork a building warrant of fitness depends on.
New Lynn sits within the Whau Local Board area of Auckland Council, and any work that needs a consent or an inspection runs through the council’s usual process. We take care of that paperwork as part of the work.
Coming To You
Getting to You in New Lynn
We’re a West Auckland firm, so we’re passing through New Lynn pretty much all the time. That makes getting to you easy, and it’s a run we do constantly.
From our base in Waitākere we head out along Swanson Road and onto Great North Road, which drops us straight into the New Lynn town centre in around half an hour. Great North Road is the spine of the suburb, so wherever you are, we’re never far off it.
There’s no coming to us, we come to you. Whether you’re in an apartment by the station, a brick home on a back street, or a shop in the town centre, give us the address and we’ll be there, van loaded and ready to work.
NEW LYNN ELECTRICIAN FAQs
Do you do electrical work in New Lynn apartments and townhouses?
Yes, a lot of it. The density around the station means shared supplies, separate metering, body-corporate common areas and car-park EV charging, which all need planning a standalone house doesn’t. We’ve done that work and know how it’s meant to fit together, so we get it right the first time.
My older New Lynn brick home still has its original switchboard. Should it be replaced?
Often, yes. A lot of the area’s older brick and state homes still run the board they were built with, and those can’t take a modern safety switch or keep up with today’s appliances. We’ll inspect it, tell you honestly whether it needs a full upgrade or just attention, and explain why either way.
Can you fit out a shop or office around LynnMall or the town centre?
We can. Commercial work is a big part of what we do: three-phase power, lighting, shop and office fit-outs, emergency lighting and the compliance paperwork a building warrant of fitness needs. We work to a tenant’s opening date, not our own.
Can you install an EV charger at a New Lynn townhouse or apartment?
Yes. For a standalone home it’s straightforward. For a townhouse or apartment we check the building or unit supply has the headroom first, then run the charger in properly, including the shared-carpark setups that need a bit more thought.
How long does it take you to get to a New Lynn job?
About half an hour from our Waitākere base, via Swanson Road and Great North Road. It’s a drive we do all the time. When it’s an emergency we come straight away, and for booked work we agree a time and turn up on it.
