Electrician in Swanson
Registered West Auckland electricians, five minutes away in Waitākere
We’re Totally Amped Electrical, and our base in Waitākere is about five minutes from the centre of Swanson. That makes us close to a next-door neighbour. We’ve been wiring, repairing and rewiring West Auckland homes and businesses since 2009, and Swanson, with its big sections, bush edges and mix of old and new houses, is exactly the kind of patch we know inside out.

Why Swanson Chooses Us
Why Swanson Locals Choose Us
Plenty of electricians will quote a Swanson job. Far fewer are actually based out here. We are. From our Waitākere base it’s a short run down Waitākere Road to reach you, so a Swanson callout isn’t a cross-town expedition for us. It’s local work.
That closeness matters more than it sounds. Swanson isn’t a tidy grid of identical townhouses. You’ve got original cottages near the railway line, comfortable family homes on standard sections, and larger lifestyle blocks climbing toward the Ranges, each with its own quirks behind the walls. An electrician who knows the area already expects the long driveway, the detached shed that needs its own supply, and the older switchboard that won’t take another circuit.
We’re EWRB-registered (that’s the national board that licenses electricians in New Zealand), fully insured, and we turn up when we say we will. No drama, no mess left behind, and a clear explanation of what we found and what it needs.
Areas We Cover
Neighbourhoods We Serve in Swanson
Swanson is small enough that we cover all of it, and varied enough that no two streets ask for quite the same thing. Kumeu, just north along the same roads, is on the list too, see our electrical work in Kumeu.
Around the Swanson village and railway station, where Swanson Road does its bit of shopping and the Western Line trains pull in, you’ll find some of the suburb’s older housing. Cottages and modest family homes, often with wiring and switchboards that have been quietly working away for decades. This is switchboard-upgrade and rewire country. We see the same in the older streets of nearby Massey, where electricians serving Massey handle a lot of board work.
Head up toward the Waitākere Ranges and the character changes. The sections get bigger, the bush gets closer, and the lifestyle blocks start. Out here a job is rarely just the house. There’s a sleepout, a workshop, a pump shed, a gated entrance with lights, maybe a studio out the back that someone wired up years ago and now wants done properly.
The pockets near Swanson Reserve and the Urlich Esplanade Reserve down in Waimoko Glen back onto native bush and waterways, so damp and tree cover are part of daily life there, and they shape how we plan any outdoor work.
We also pick up plenty of jobs along the Ranui border to the south and over toward Henderson in the east, since people don’t tend to live exactly on a suburb line. If you’re a Swanson local, or near enough to call yourself one, you’re on our patch.
What We Do
Services We Provide in Swanson
Whatever the house or the shed needs, it’s likely something we do most weeks:
- Switchboard upgrades. putting a modern switchboard in where a worn-out fuse board sat fitted with the circuit breakers and safety switches an older home needs. It’s the fix for an older Swanson home where the board keeps tripping, can’t take a safety switch, or can’t keep up with how many appliances a modern household runs.
- Safety switch installation. Fitting RCDs, the safety switches that kill the power the instant something’s wrong when something goes wrong, like a faulty appliance or water reaching a circuit. They matter most on the outdoor and shed circuits that big Swanson sections tend to have a lot of.
- Electrical repairs. Tracking down the actual cause when a circuit keeps tripping, a socket’s gone dead, the lights flicker, or there’s a burning smell. We find and fix the fault, not just reset the breaker and hope.
- Renovation wiring. New wiring, circuits and points during a reno so the new kitchen, bathroom or extension is set up for how you’ll actually use it. We handle the in-wall cabling stage (sparkies call it the rough-in or first fix) through to fit-off.
- Maintenance. Scheduled checks for landlords and busy households who’d rather catch a problem early than get a 5pm phone call about it.
- EV chargers and new-build wiring. A charger for the driveway, plus heat-pump circuits, shed and sleepout supplies, outdoor power, and garden and security lighting built to survive a wet West Auckland winter.
Lifestyle Blocks & Bush Edges
Local Considerations for Swanson Electrical Work
Here’s where Swanson genuinely differs from a flat inner-city suburb, and where local knowledge earns its keep.
The lifestyle blocks. A lot of Swanson properties run well beyond the house. Feeding a detached shed, sleepout or studio usually means a sub-main (the heavier cable that carries power from the main switchboard to a separate building), and over a long driveway you have to size that cable so the power doesn’t sag by the time it gets there (electricians call it voltage drop). Pumps for water tanks and bores need their own protected circuits too. None of that is exotic work, but it’s easy to get wrong if you treat a lifestyle block like a standard quarter-acre.
The damp. Tucked against the Ranges, Swanson sits wetter than the eastern suburbs. Rain, bush cover and shade are hard on anything outdoors, so outdoor power points, garden lighting and the connections feeding sheds all need proper weatherproof gear, and older outdoor fittings out here corrode faster than most people expect. We allow for that rather than discovering it later. If you want the official line on why safety switches matter, WorkSafe’s guidance on safe living with electricity is worth a read.
The age mix. Swanson runs the full range, from homes that predate the modern switchboard to brand-new builds. Older places often need that switchboard brought up to date before they can safely carry today’s appliances, while newer homes are more about EV charging, heat pumps and smart wiring. Knowing which you’ve got changes the whole conversation.
Swanson sits within the Henderson-Massey Local Board area of Auckland Council, and any work that needs a consent or an inspection runs through the council’s usual process. We handle that side as a matter of course.
Coming To You
Getting to You in Swanson
One of the perks of using us is simple: we’re already out here, so coming to you is quick.
From our base in Waitākere we head out along Waitākere Road (Route 24), turn onto Swanson Road, and we’re into the heart of Swanson in about five minutes. That’s the same road that carries on to Henderson, so we’re running it constantly.
And remember, the van comes to you, not the other way round. Whether you’re near the station, off Swanson Road, or up a long drive toward the Ranges, give us the address and we’ll be there, van loaded and ready to work.
SWANSON ELECTRICIAN FAQs
Why do the outdoor power points and lights at my Swanson place keep failing?
Damp is usually the culprit. Tucked against the Ranges, Swanson gets more rain and shade than most of Auckland, and that’s hard on anything outside. Older outdoor fittings corrode, water creeps into connections, and circuits start tripping. We swap failed gear for properly weatherproof fittings and make sure the outdoor circuits are protected, so they last instead of packing up every winter.
Can you wire a shed, sleepout or workshop on a lifestyle block?
Yes, and it’s a big part of what we do out here. Feeding a separate building means running a sub-main from the main board and sizing the cable for the distance, plus the right protection for the circuit. We handle the lot, including the outdoor power and lighting that usually comes with it.
My Swanson house has an old switchboard. Does it need replacing?
Often, yes. Older boards with rewireable fuses can’t take a modern safety switch and struggle with the load from today’s appliances. We’ll inspect it, tell you honestly whether it needs upgrading or just attention, and explain why.
Do you install EV chargers in Swanson?
We do. We’ll check your switchboard has the capacity, sort the cable run from the board to the driveway, and fit a charger that suits your car and your home. Lifestyle blocks with longer runs are no problem.
How quickly can you get to a Swanson job?
Quickly, because we’re close. Our base in Waitākere is about five minutes away via Waitākere Road. If it’s urgent we’ll move fast, and for planned work we’ll lock in a time that suits and stick to it.
