Electrician in Kumeu
Registered West Auckland electricians, ten minutes away in Waitākere
We’re Totally Amped Electrical, and our base in Waitākere is about ten minutes from the middle of Kumeu, straight out along Waitākere Road. That makes us genuinely local out here in the wine country, not a town firm pricing in the drive. We’ve been wiring, repairing and rewiring West Auckland homes, lifestyle blocks and businesses since 2009, and Kumeu, with its vineyards, big rural sections and fast-filling Huapai end, is exactly the kind of patch we know well.

Why Kumeu Chooses Us
Why Kumeu Locals Choose Us
Plenty of electricians will quote a Kumeu job. Far fewer are based out this way. We are. From our Waitākere base it’s a short run along Waitākere Road to reach you, so a Kumeu callout is local work for us, not a cross-town expedition with the travel built into the bill.
Kumeu is not a grid of identical houses, and that’s the whole point. You’ve got original farmhouses on the old lots, lifestyle blocks with sheds and sleepouts, working vineyards and packhouses, and a wave of brand-new homes filling in around Huapai. Every one of them asks for something different behind the walls. An electrician who actually knows the area already expects the long driveway, the detached shed that needs its own supply, the three-phase gear humming away in a winery, and the old farmhouse board that won’t take one more circuit.
We’re registered electricians under the EWRB (the body that licenses sparkies across New Zealand), fully insured, and we show up when we said we would. No mess left behind, and a straight explanation of what we found and what it actually needs.
Areas We Cover
Neighbourhoods We Serve in Kumeu
Kumeu and Huapai have grown together into one town since the 1970s, and we cover all of it, plus the rural roads that spread out around it.
Around the older Kumeu township and the Kumeu Showgrounds, where the annual show packs the grounds out every year, you’ll find a lot of the legacy housing. Farmhouses and cottages with wiring and switchboards that have been quietly working away for decades. This is switchboard-upgrade and rewire country.
Push west into Huapai and the picture changes completely. New subdivisions, fresh homes going up fast, and families moving in who want EV charging, proper lighting design and smart wiring from day one. Different decade, different job, same suburb.
Then there’s the land that makes Kumeu, Kumeu: the lifestyle blocks and the vineyards. This is wine country, with established names like Kumeu River, Coopers Creek, Nobilo and Soljans giving the area its character. Out on these properties a job is rarely just the house. There’s a shed, a packhouse, a pump for the bore, cellar-door and event lighting, a gated entrance, maybe a sleepout someone wired years ago that now wants doing properly.
We also pick up plenty of work just over the edges, since nobody lives exactly on a suburb line. Riverhead to the north, Whenuapai to the east, Taupaki to the south, and across toward Westgate. If you call yourself a Kumeu local, or near enough, you’re on our patch.
What We Do
Services We Provide in Kumeu
Whatever the house, the shed or the block needs, it’s likely something we’re on most weeks:
- Switchboard upgrades. replacing a worn-out fuse board with an up-to-date switchboard with sound breakers and safety switches throughout. It’s the fix for an older Kumeu farmhouse where the board keeps tripping, can’t take a safety switch, or simply can’t keep up with everything a modern household plugs in.
- Safety switch installation. Fitting RCDs, the safety switches that cut power almost instantly when something goes wrong, like a faulty appliance or water reaching a circuit. They matter most on the outdoor, shed and pump circuits that rural Kumeu blocks tend to have a lot of.
- Electrical repairs. Finding the actual cause when a circuit keeps tripping, a socket’s gone dead, the lights flicker, or there’s a burning smell. We track down and fix the fault, rather than reset the breaker and cross our fingers.
- Renovation wiring. New wiring, circuits and points during a reno so the new kitchen, bathroom or extension suits how you actually live. We handle the in-wall cabling stage (electricians call this stage the first fix) right through to fit-off.
- Power poles, lines and rural supply. Private poles and the supply lines that feed sheds, pumps and paddocks. On a lifestyle block the power often has to travel a long way past the house, and that needs doing right.
- Vineyard and commercial work. Three-phase power, packhouse and cellar-door wiring, and switchboard work for the wineries, growers and small businesses that run out here.
- EV chargers and new-build wiring. A charger for the driveway, plus heat-pump circuits, shed and sleepout supplies, outdoor power and lighting built to handle a wet West Auckland winter, ideal for the new Huapai builds.

Local Considerations for Kumeu Electrical Work
Here’s where Kumeu genuinely differs from a flat inner-city suburb, and where knowing the area earns its keep.
The lifestyle blocks and vineyards. A lot of Kumeu properties run well beyond the house. Feeding a detached shed, packhouse, sleepout or pump usually calls for a sub-main, the thicker feed that runs power out from the main board to a separate building. Push it down a long rural driveway on undersized cable and the voltage tails off before it arrives, so we size the cable for the distance from the start. Winery and growing operations often need three-phase power for pumps, chillers and plant, which is a different conversation again.
The river flats. Kumeu sits along the Kumeū River, on land that was a wetland and flood plain long before the houses arrived. The low-lying ground stays damp, and damp is hard on anything electrical that lives outside. Outdoor power points, garden and security lighting, and the connections feeding sheds all need proper weatherproof gear and solid RCD protection. We plan for that rather than discover it after the first heavy winter. If you want the official line on why safety switches matter, WorkSafe’s guidance on safe living with electricity is a good read.
The old-and-new split. Kumeu runs the full range, from farmhouses that predate the modern switchboard to brand-new Huapai builds. Older places usually need that board brought up to date before they can safely carry today’s appliances, while the new homes are all about EV charging, heat pumps and smart wiring. Knowing which one you’ve got changes the whole job.
Kumeu sits within the Rodney Local Board area of Auckland Council, and any work that needs a consent or an inspection runs through the council’s usual process. We sort that side out as a matter of course.

KUMEU ELECTRICIAN FAQs
The outdoor power and lights on my Kumeu block keep failing. Why?
Damp is usually behind it. Kumeu sits on old river-flat land that holds water, and that’s tough on anything electrical outside. Older outdoor fittings corrode, water creeps into connections, and circuits start tripping. We replace failed gear with properly weatherproof fittings and make sure the outdoor and shed circuits have the right protection, so they last instead of packing up each winter.
Can you wire a shed, packhouse or pump on a rural block?
Yes, and it’s a big part of what we do out here. Feeding a separate building means running a sub-main from the main board and sizing the cable for the distance, plus the right protection for the circuit. If the gear needs three-phase power, like a lot of winery and growing equipment does, we sort that too.
My old Kumeu farmhouse still has its original switchboard. Does it need replacing?
Often, yes. Older boards with rewireable fuses can’t take a modern safety switch and tend to struggle with the load from today’s appliances. We’ll inspect it, tell you honestly whether it needs a full upgrade or just some attention, and explain the reasoning either way.
Do you install EV chargers in Kumeu and Huapai?
We do, plenty of them. We’ll check your switchboard has the capacity, sort the cable run from the board to where you park, and fit a charger that suits your car and your home. New Huapai builds are usually straightforward, and longer runs on a rural block are no problem.
How quickly can you get to a Kumeu job?
Quickly, because we’re close. Our base in Waitākere is about ten minutes away via Waitākere Road. Urgent faults get us out as quick as we can manage, and planned jobs get a booked time we keep.
