Electrician in Remuera

Registered electricians for Remuera’s heritage villas and character homes

We’re Totally Amped Electrical, registered Auckland electricians who’ve been wiring, rewiring and upgrading homes since 2009. Remuera sits within our patch: a suburb of heritage villas, pre-war bungalows and character homes where older wiring comes with the territory. We head out from our Waitakere base via the Northwestern Motorway and we’re in Remuera in around half an hour, ready to work on the kind of older homes we know well.

Why Remuera Chooses Us

Why Remuera Locals Choose Us

Remuera is one of Auckland’s oldest suburbs, and older suburbs mean older wiring. Character villas and pre-war bungalows were built for a different era, before heat pumps, double ovens and EV chargers were normal household loads. The homes are beautiful, but they need electricians who understand that opening a fuse board from the 1950s is a very different job from wiring a new townhouse.

We’re EWRB-registered, which is the Electrical Workers Registration Board that licenses sparkies in New Zealand. All our work is done to the current wiring rules and where a job legally needs it you get a Certificate of Compliance, your proof the work’s been done properly. Before we touch anything we tell you in plain language what we’ve found and what it’ll take to fix it. No jargon, no pressure.

Areas We Cover

Neighbourhoods We Serve in Remuera

Remuera Road is the spine of the suburb and most of our work is within a few minutes of it. The Remuera Village strip, from the Upland Road intersection up to the shops near the library, is classic villa and bungalow territory. Pull off a cover plate in one of these homes and you’ll often find the original cloth-insulated wiring still in the wall. That’s rewire country, and we do plenty of it.

The Upland Road and Victoria Avenue area is leafier and quieter, with larger homes on bigger sections. Many have outdoor wiring runs to garages, workshops and garden lighting that hasn’t been touched in decades. Bassett Road and Seaview Road lean similarly toward substantial older homes, a number of them on the Auckland Council Special Character register, where any alteration has to respect the original architecture. We work sympathetically on those, using concealed conduit runs where exposed cabling would look wrong.

Down toward the Market Road and Greenlane boundary the housing shifts slightly, more 1960s and 70s stock alongside the older villas, which brings a different generation of wiring issues. Near the Hobson Bay edge, salt air is a real factor for anything mounted outside, so we spec fittings rated for the environment. Near the Newmarket border, apartment buildings and townhouses start appearing and those are a different kind of job again. All of it falls under the Orakei Local Board area, and it’s well within our regular run.

What We Do

Services We Provide in Remuera

The calls we get most often from Remuera:

  • Switchboard upgrades. Replacing an old fuse board with a modern unit fitted with circuit breakers and safety switches. In older Remuera homes the original board often can’t take a safety switch as-is, so what starts as a request for an RCD often becomes a full upgrade once we get the cover off.
  • Safety switch installation. Fitting RCDs, the switches that cut the power in milliseconds if something goes wrong. They’re the single biggest electrical safety upgrade you can make in an older home.
  • Electrical repairs. Tracking down and fixing the actual fault when a circuit trips, a socket goes dead, lights flicker or there’s a burning smell. We find the cause, not just reset the breaker.
  • Rewires and renovation wiring. Full rewires for older homes with deteriorated cloth or rubber cable, plus new circuits and points for kitchen and bathroom renovations. In character homes we work to keep the wiring discreet.
  • Custom lighting. Lighting design and installation for renovated Remuera homes where lighting is part of the brief, not an afterthought. Concealed drivers, LED tape, pelmet lighting, bathroom IP-rated fittings.
  • EV charger installation. Dedicated EV charging circuits for older garages and carports. We check the existing board and supply first, upgrade what’s needed, and install it properly.

Older Homes, Local Knowledge

Local Considerations for Remuera Wiring

A significant part of Remuera’s housing sits under the Auckland Unitary Plan’s Special Character overlay, which means the homes are worth preserving and alterations have to respect the original character. From an electrical standpoint, that shapes how we run cables: in a special character home we use concealed conduit routes rather than clipping cables across weatherboards, and we choose fittings that suit the era. A brushed-chrome LED downlight in a 1920s villa looks wrong; a period-sympathetic fitting looks right.

The other big local factor is the age of the wiring itself. Pre-war homes were run on early cable that’s now brittle and can’t safely be extended. Homes from the 1940s and 50s often have rewireable fuse boards that pre-date safety switches and can’t take an RCD without being replaced. The usual story: someone calls us about fitting a safety switch, we open the board, and it’s a 1950s rewireable fuse board with no room for a modern RCD. A switchboard upgrade is the only proper fix.

EV charging is an interesting one in Remuera. The suburb has a lot of older garages and carports that were never wired for more than a single light and a socket. Running a dedicated EV circuit to one of these often means upgrading the supply to the garage and checking the main board has the capacity. It’s doable, but it’s a proper installation job, not a plug-in adapter. If you’re unsure what’s involved, WorkSafe’s guidance on electrical safety is worth reading first.

Coming To You

Getting to You in Remuera

We come to you. From our Waitakere base we head out on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16), through the CMJ interchange and onto the Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound, then off at the Greenlane interchange and up Remuera Road. It’s around 30 km and takes about half an hour in normal traffic. From Remuera Road we can reach anywhere in the suburb easily, including the Upland Road and Bassett Road pockets that sit a bit off the main drag.

We’re out there regularly, so Remuera is a familiar part of our run, not an occasional detour. Book a time and we’ll come to you.

REMUERA ELECTRICIAN FAQs

Do you work on the older villas and character homes in Remuera?

Yes, and it’s a big part of what we do in the suburb. We understand how older homes are wired and we work to keep things sympathetic to the character of the house where that matters.

Our fuse board is really old and we want a safety switch fitted. Is that possible?

Sometimes, but on older rewireable boards it’s often not possible without replacing the whole board. We’ll have a look and tell you exactly what’s needed before any work starts.

Can you do a full rewire of an older Remuera home?

Yes. Full rewires are a regular job for us on older Auckland homes. We work through in stages so you’re not without power longer than necessary, and in character homes we route cables discreetly.

How long does it take to get to Remuera from Waitakere?

About half an hour via the Northwestern and Southern motorways. We’re out there regularly, so it’s a familiar run.

We want to add an EV charger to our old garage. Is the existing wiring up to it?

Older garages often aren’t. We check the supply cable from the main board, the board capacity, and the garage wiring before committing to anything. If it needs upgrading first, we’ll tell you upfront.

Our home is on the Special Character register. Do you know how to work sympathetically?

Yes. That usually means concealed conduit runs instead of surface-mounted cable, and choosing fittings that suit the era. We’ve done it on a few Remuera homes and we know what to look out for.

Do we need a Certificate of Compliance?

For most notifiable electrical work, yes. It’s the legal proof the work meets the wiring rules and it’s worth keeping for insurance and resale. We provide it as part of the job where it’s required.
