Understanding Your Electrical Repair

When You Need an Electrician

Most Auckland homes give you warning signs before anything really goes wrong. Problem is, people ignore them. A single flickering light? Probably just a loose bulb. Every light in the house flickering when the heat pump kicks in? Different story. That’s circuit overload, and it’s been building for months. A socket that’s stopped working might be a tripped RCD. Reset it, job done. Or it might be a burnt connection in the wall cavity, quietly cooking the wiring until something catches.

The ones you shouldn’t mess around with: a burning plastic smell from the switchboard, a socket or switch that’s warm to touch, sparks when you plug something in, shocks off an appliance, an RCD that trips every time you reset it. These are on WorkSafe’s electricity hazards list for a reason. Turn the power off at the main. Don’t use that circuit. Give us a call.

Working With Totally Amped Electrical

Electrical Repairs Across Auckland

Auckland’s electrical problems aren’t the same everywhere. Piha, Bethells, Muriwai, that coastal stretch. Out there it’s mostly salt-corroded outdoor fittings. Cheap gear lasts 2 or 3 years tops before the terminals go green and things start arcing. Head inland to Titirangi and the Waitakere foothills and the problem flips: humidity-related RCD trips every winter. Moisture in the switchboard, nothing glamorous. Further through Henderson, Glen Eden, Massey, it’s a different issue again. 1960s and 70s homes with undersized circuits that can’t cope with a modern household.

North Shore’s newer. Glenfield, Albany, Hillcrest, Takapuna. Less about decaying wiring, more about heat pumps, EV chargers, and home offices overloading circuits the original builder never expected. City side (Parnell, Remuera, Epsom, Grey Lynn) is where the real old wiring lives. Cloth-insulated, pre-1940s villa wiring. Still works, mostly. Until it doesn’t.

Two years on from the 2023 Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle, we’re still pulling moisture-damaged gear out of subfloors and wall cavities. If your RCD trips in rain but never in dry weather, that’s your answer.

ELECTRICAL REPAIRS FAQs

What types of electrical problems do you fix most often in Auckland?

Loads of them. The regulars: flickering lights from overloaded circuits. RCDs that keep tripping (usually a faulty appliance, sometimes moisture in a fitting). Dead sockets that came back to life once we traced a burnt connection inside the wall. Hot water cylinder elements that finally gave up somewhere around the 12 to 15 year mark. Oven elements, power surge damage after storms, switchboard faults in older homes that were never built to run heat pumps and EV chargers at the same time. If it’s electrical and it’s broken, we’ve seen it before.

How do you find the fault?

Methodically. First we listen. When does it happen, what changed, which appliances are affected. Then we test the circuit properly with real test gear. Insulation resistance, earth leakage, loop impedance, voltage drop, whatever the symptoms point to. Here’s the thing though: the fault is almost never where it looks like it is. That dead socket in the kitchen? Usually a burnt connection at the switchboard terminal. That tripping RCD? Often moisture in an outdoor light fitting two rooms away. We trace it back to the source before we touch a screwdriver.

How much does an electrical repair cost in Auckland?

Depends what’s wrong. A simple socket or switch replacement might be half an hour on site. A proper fault-find on an intermittent RCD trip can take 2 or 3 hours because the fault’s almost never where the symptom is. We give you a written quote before starting anything substantial, and the call-out fee is fixed. No hidden extras.

My RCD keeps tripping. What’s going on?

Honestly? Usually one of three things. A faulty appliance (unplug everything, reset the RCD, plug things back in one at a time until it trips, that’s your culprit). Or moisture in a switchboard or outlet, common in Auckland winters and especially after the 2023 floods. Or old wiring that’s started leaking current to earth. Every RCD trip is a safety warning. Don’t keep resetting it. Get it checked.

Do you work on both residential and commercial properties?

Both. Residential is the bulk of it, from simple socket repairs in a rental to full switchboard replacements in character villas. Commercial too, from shops and offices to light industrial. Same approach either way. Diagnose properly, fix it right, leave the paperwork tidy.
